I tell my story as I begin to work as a deputy sheriff for the Butler County Sheriffs Office in Hamilton, Ohio. The first day I report to the chief deputy's office, he takes me downstairs to the jail and a deputy takes my picture with a Polaroid camera. We go back upstairs to the chief's office with photo in hand. Once in the office, he proceeds to type out an I.D. card with my name, height, weight and blood type. He then attaches the photo to the card and hands it to me. As I take the card, I see him open the center drawer of his desk and take a gold badge out which he then hands to me. He then finds me a pair of uniform pants, two shirts and a jacket that is two sizes to big for me and tells me to report to the jail tonight at 11:00p.m.. That in a nutshell, was my training. This is where my story begins. I have a gold badge, uniform, gun belt and gun Thanks to all of the honest and hard working deputies, who taught me how to do the job. This was one of the most rewarding periods of my life. I hope everyone who reads this book enjoys the story of how we managed to do the job with so few officers and none of the technology that today's officers enjoy. We did not have bullet proof vests. We used typewriters to write reports. There were no backup officers if you were on a dangerous call. Most of the time the only backup you had were your two brothers, Mr. Smith and Mr. Wesson and they could talk very loud, six times without reloadin

The Last Detective, a book by Leslie Thomas. Get The Last Detective Books in several format like PDF, EPUB, Mobi. Download The Last Detective books, A northwest London detective tackles a twenty-five-year-old missing persons case in this comic crime novel. Dangerous Davies, you understand, earned his nickname in the same way that fat men nicknamed “Tiny” earn theirs. But while he may not inspire dread in the hearts of London’s bad guys, he is nevertheless on the side of right and good, and has a copper’s badge to prove it. True, he is known as the “last detective” —not because there are no others like him, but because he is, in nearly every instance, the last boy picked for the team (although his dog does like him). With little actual work to do, Dangerous has plenty of time to pick through the cases that everybody else has forgotten. And when he stumbles across a real piece of ancient history, it looks like the perfect way to keep him out of trouble and out of the real coppers’ way. Originally published in 1976, this is the first novel in the Dangerous Davies series, which was subsequently adapted for television in the UK; it was also made into a movie in 1981. “Recommended to anyone who enjoys a good detective yarn with plenty of laughs.” —Daily Express (UK) “Splendid comic writing.” —Daily Mail (UK)

Hangman, a book by Stephan Talty. Get Hangman Books in several format like PDF, EPUB, Mobi. Download Hangman books, New York Times bestselling author Stephan Talty’s acclaimed fiction debut, Black Irish, won him comparisons to such thriller masters as Jo Nesbø, Karin Slaughter, and Tana French. Now, this chilling novel brings back intrepid heroine Absalom Kearney, a driven police detective with a haunted past, trying to make a difference in a troubled town. “A brilliant thriller series.”—Tess Gerritsen Hangman, Hangman, what do you see? Four little girls, as cute as can be. The eerie schoolyard chant still sends ripples of horror through North Buffalo. Not so long ago, serial killer Marcus Flynn preyed upon the community’s teenaged daughters—until he was cornered and shot in the head. But Flynn lived, carrying to prison the nickname “Hangman,” along with the secret of his last victim’s fate. Homicide cop Abbie Kearney wasn’t around during Hangman’s reign of terror. She hadn’t yet come home to wear her dad’s old badge in the tough Irish American stronghold known as “the County.” Abbie had never experienced firsthand the horror of Hangman. Until now. Hangman, Hangman, where do they go? Down on the ground, where the daffodils grow. A corrections officer lies dead, a prison van stands empty . . . and somewhere out there, the monster who condemned innocents to death at the end of a rope watches and waits to strike again. Abbie leads a desperate manhunt through a city driven to its knees by fear, matching wits with a predator as brilliant as he is elusive. But as more victims are claimed, a rising tide of secrecy, paranoia, and politics forces her to realize that stepping beyond the law may be the only way to find justice. Because with each passing hour, the stakes grow higher—and Hangman’s noose gets tighter.

Time Binge, a book by Martina Fetzer. Get Time Binge Books in several format like PDF, EPUB, Mobi. Download Time Binge books, Time Travel: What Could Go Wrong? Paranormal detectives Arturo Brooks and Edward Smith hated time travel before they ever laid eyes on a time machine. Now, some jerk has gone and invented one, and the consequences go beyond breaking the timeline. This time machine renders anyone who dares to use it immortal. Plenty of people would love to get their hands on technology like that. Racing against several clocks, Brooks and Smith team up with a terrified Puritan and a moon-dwelling hipster to stop increasingly bizarre time travel exploits from tearing their lives and reality apart, before it's too late… Or too soon. About the Series From the mind of award-winning author* Martina Fetzer, the Brooks & Smith series brings fast-paced science fiction and fantasy with an emphasis on humor. It follows two detectives and their makeshift family on a series of increasingly absurd adventures. These books are often silly, sometimes dark, and never child friendly. *1996, 1997, 1998 Oakview Elementary Perfect Attendance Award

Typical, a book by Padgett Powell. Get Typical Books in several format like PDF, EPUB, Mobi. Download Typical books, Twenty-three surreal fictions—stories, character assassinations, and mini-travelogues—from one of the most heralded writers of the American South There are many things that repulse “Dr. Ordinary.” “Kansas” is notable for its distinct lack of farmland. “Wayne’s Fate” is most unfortunate, not merely for Wayne but for the roofer pal who stands by watching his good buddy lose his head. “Miss Resignation” simply cannot win at Bingo. And there is nothing “Typical” about the unemployed steelworker and self-described “piece of crud” who strides through this collection’s title story. Welcome to the world of Padgett Powell, one of the most original American literary voices in recent memory. Typical is both a bravura demonstration of Powell’s passion for words, and an offbeat, perceptive view of contemporary life—an enthralling work by a one-of-a-kind wordsmith, and a redefinition of what short fiction can be.

Cowboys and Indians, a book by Gordon Sinclair. Get Cowboys and Indians Books in several format like PDF, EPUB, Mobi. Download Cowboys and Indians books, When J.J. Harper of the Island Lake Tribal Council was fatally shot on a wintry Winnipeg street in 1988, the city police department was quick to absolve the officer involved from all blame. Less than a day after the shooting, Police Chief Herb Stephen announced that Harper had died during a struggle for Constable Robert Cross’s gun. But the truth was not so cut and dried. Far from closing the case, Stephen’s remarks were just the start of this dramatic tale of sex, death, threats, flimsy charges, and a police force so out of control that a prominent lawyer, a senior Crown attorney, and a respected journalist all had reason to suspect they were being watched by the police. Pursued doggedly byWinnipeg Free Presscolumnist Gordon Sinclair Jr., the stranger-than-fiction story of the shooting of J.J. Harper points a finger at the growing disaster of race relations and policing in Canada’s inner cities.

"A bright and funny new heroine, brisk and clever writing, and wonderfully snappy dialogue." --Mystery Love Company "Divorcee Ellie Bernstein is the group leader for her Weight Winners class meeting in a Colorado Springs church. When one of the most popular members dies fully clothed in a full bathtub, Ellie writes it off as an accident. Another accident involving club members (a van goes off a cliff while inside the couple are making love) seems a little more suspicious, but the death of yet another Weight Winner, an elderly woman found skewered by her knitting needles, is definitely murder. When attractive homicide cop detective Lt. Peter Miller brusquely turns down Ellie's offer to help investigate, she sets off on her own to find out who is killing former fatties who are closest to their weight goals." -- Publishers Weekly

Bootleggers and Beer Barons of the Prohibition Era, a book by J. Anne Funderburg. Get Bootleggers and Beer Barons of the Prohibition Era Books in several format like PDF, EPUB, Mobi. Download Bootleggers and Beer Barons of the Prohibition Era books, This work is an accurate, wide-ranging, and entertaining account of the illegal liquor traffic during the Prohibition Era (1920 to 1933). Based on FBI files, legal documents, old newspapers and other sources, it offers a coast-to-coast survey of Volstead crime--outrageous stories of America's most notorious liquor lords, including Al Capone and Dutch Schultz. Readers will find the lesser known Volstead outlaws to be as fascinating as their more famous counterparts. The riveting tales of Max Hassel, Waxy Gordon, Roy Olmstead, the Purple Gang, the Havre Bunch, and the Capitol Hill Bootlegger will be new to most readers. Likewise, the exploits of women bootleggers and flying bootleggers are unknown to most Americans. Books about Prohibition usually note that Canadian liquor exporters abetted the U.S. bootleggers, but they fail to go into detail. Bootleggers and Beer Barons examines the major cross-border routes for smuggling liquor from Canada into the U.S.: Quebec to Vermont and New York, Ontario to Michigan, Saskatchewan to Montana, and British Columbia to Washington.

Download Booze and the Private Eye books, The hard-bitten PI with a bottle of bourbon in his desk drawer--it's an image as old as the genre of hard-boiled detective fiction itself. Alcohol has long been an important element of detective fiction, but it is no mere prop. Rather, the treatment of alcohol within the works informs and illustrates the detective's moral code, and casts light upon the society's attitudes towards drink. This examination of the role of alcohol in hard-boiled detective fiction begins with the genre's birth, in an era strongly influenced and affected by prohibition, and follows both the genre's development and its relation to our changing understanding of and attitudes towards alcohol and alcoholism. It discusses the works of Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Mickey Spillane, Robert B. Parker, Lawrence Block, Marcia Muller, Karen Kijewski and Sue Grafton. There are bibliographies of both the primary and critical texts, and an index of authors and works.

While vampires plot revenge, the detectives and their family are targeted by protestors, monster rights activists, and an aesthetics-obsessed billionaire ready to make the men an offer that will change their lives (and afterlives) forever. Can they die happily ever after? About the Series From the mind of award-winning author* Martina Fetzer, the Brooks & Smith series brings fast-paced science fiction and fantasy with an emphasis on humor. It follows two detectives and their makeshift family on a series of increasingly absurd adventures. These books are often silly, sometimes dark, and never child friendly. *1996, 1997, 1998 Oakview Elementary Perfect Attendance Award

Today, Think has one last shot with Maddox when he's placed under her surveillance. Will Maddox try to hurt someone again? Is that what Think is hearing in that head of his? Or is she reading into it...? And could this all be related to why Think is being "listened to" in the first place? About the series: Kathy "Think" Lipinski is a brilliant, yet disgraced psychotherapist who has changed careers to become a probation officer. The job is perfect for Think: a ground-breaking and highly controversial technology has made it possible to telepathically monitor the thoughts of convicts on probation. From now on, Think can listen to the thoughts of her "protégés" in her head. But every innovation comes at a price, and soon Think must ask herself whom she can trust - herself included... Trent Kennedy Johnson is a freelance writer based in Los Angeles, California. American Exodus, a book by Stephen Hays. Get American Exodus Books in several format like PDF, EPUB, Mobi. Download American Exodus books, American Exodus is a race against time to transform the Body of Christ from faith-based theology alone to being founded in love. To transform from the authority of the state to follow only Christ, past thousands of years of tradition to remember the whole truth of creation, faith, holiness and the power of God to preserve nations. But if the church comes of age in a world filled with unprecedented lawlessness, the price for following Jesus might be very high. Only the Lord knows who will be for Him and who will be against Him when the time comes, but the end is coming""His patience is fulfilled. Can humanity humble itself and gain the mercy of God? Or will the end come with humans isolated and alone at the mercy of merciless powers? American Exodus is about the power of the Holy Spirit to manifest Himself in ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things. It rises to heart and life-changing heights of the Glory of the Lamb, and it dives to the depths of tormented souls desperately trying to find refuge, sanctuary, healing, and reconciliation. It is a study on how dramatically everything can change, yet how constant the power and grace of God is for those who are willing to seek out the Holy Place.

Get Police Courts in Nineteenth-Century Scotland, Volume 1 Books in several format like PDF, EPUB, Mobi. Download Police Courts in Nineteenth-Century Scotland, Volume 1 books, Taking the form of two companion volumes, Police Courts in Nineteenth-Century Scotland represents the first major investigation into the administration, experience, impact and representation of summary justice in Scottish towns, c.1800 to 1892. Each volume explores diverse, but complementary, themes relating to judicial practices, relationships, experiences and discourses through the lens of the same subject matter: the police court. Volume 1, with the subtitle Magistrates, Media and the Masses, provides an institutional, social and cultural history of the establishment, development and practice of police courts. It explores their rise, purpose and internal workings, and how justice was administered and experienced by those who attended them in a variety of roles. Special attention is given to examining how courtroom discourse was represented in print culture, the role of the media in providing a discursive commentary on summary justice, and the ways in which magistrates and the police engaged in a law and order dialogue with the press. Throughout, consideration is given to uncovering the relationship between magistrates, the courts, the police and the wider community, and to charting the implications of the rise of summary justice and the ’police-man’ state for the urban masses (as evidenced through prosecution, conviction and punishment patterns). Volume 2, with the subtitle Boundaries, Behaviours and Bodies, explores, through themed case studies, how police courts shaped conceptual, spatial, temporal and commercial boundaries by regulating every-day activities, pastimes and cultures.
