Arminius and Thusnelda Versus Rome, a book by Michael Kramer. Get Arminius and Thusnelda Versus Rome Books in several format like PDF, EPUB, Mobi. Download Arminius and Thusnelda Versus Rome books, In September of 9 A.D., The three legions and their supporting units under the command of Varus thought that they could complete the Roman conquest of Germania. Due to the efforts of Thusnelda and her husband, Armin or, if you like, his Latin name, Arminius, the Romans lost! When he was informed about the loss of his legions and their supporting units, Augustus began wailing, "Varus, Varus, give me back my legions!" For months afterwards, he left his hair to grow and also his beard and he appeared to be totally unkept! What made it all much harder for the Romans to bear was a few warriors only supported Arminius and Thusnelda. However, they did manage to increase their number for the final battle at Kalkriese Hill in the Teutoburg Forest. That battle set the current boundaries of Europe, between those who drink wine and speak the Latin based language, as opposed to those who like to drink beer and speak the Germanic languages!

Robert Armin and Shakespeare's Performed Songs, a book by Catherine A. Henze. Get Robert Armin and Shakespeare's Performed Songs Books in several format like PDF, EPUB, Mobi. Download Robert Armin and Shakespeare's Performed Songs books, After Robert Armin joined the Chamberlain's Men, singing in Shakespeare's dramas catapulted from 1.25 songs and 9.95 lines of singing per play to 3.44 songs and 29.75 lines of singing, a virtually unnoticed phenomenon. In addition, many of the songs became seemingly improvisatory—similar to Armin's personal style as an author and solo comedian. In order to study Armin's collaborative impact, this interdisciplinary book investigates the songs that have Renaissance music that could have been heard on Shakespeare's stage. They occur in some of Shakespeare's most famous plays, including Much Ado About Nothing, Twelfth Night, Hamlet, and The Tempest. In fact, Shakespeare's plays, as we have them, are not complete. They are missing the music that could have accompanied the plays’ songs. Significantly, Renaissance vocal music, far beyond just providing entertainment, was believed to alter the bodies and souls of both performers and auditors to agree with its characteristics, directly inciting passions from love to melancholy. By collaborating with early modern music editor and performing artist Lawrence Lipnik, Catherine Henze is able to provide new performance editions of seventeen songs, including spoken interruptions and cuts and rearrangement of the music to accommodate the dramatist's words. Next, Henze analyzes the complete songs, words and music, according to Renaissance literary and music primary sources, and applies the new information to interpretations of characters and scenes, frequently challenging commonly held literary assessments. The book is organized according to Armin's involvement with the plays, before, during, and after the comic actor joined Shakespeare's company. It offers readers the tools to interpret not only these songs, but also vocal music in dramas by other Renaissance playwrights. Moreover, Robert Armin and Shakespeare's Performed Songs, written with non-specialized terminology, provides a gateway to new areas of research and interpretation in an increasingly significant interdisciplinary field for all interested in Shakespeare and early modern drama.

Shakespeare in Company, a book by Bart van Es. Get Shakespeare in Company Books in several format like PDF, EPUB, Mobi. Download Shakespeare in Company books, This book is about two very different kinds of company. On the one hand it concerns Shakespeare's poet-playwright contemporaries, such as Marlowe, Jonson, and Fletcher. On the other, it examines the contribution of his fellow actors, including Burbage, Armin, and Kemp. Traditionally, criticism has treated these two influences in separation, so that Shakespeare is considered either in relation to educated Renaissance culture, or as a man of the theatre. Shakespeare in Company unites these perspectives. Bart van Es argues that Shakespeare's decision, in 1594, to become an investor (or 'sharer') in the newly formed Chamberlain's acting company had a transformative effect on his writing, moving him beyond the conventions of Renaissance dramaturgy. On the basis of the physical distinctiveness of his actors, Shakespeare developed 'relational drama', something no previous dramatist had explored. This book traces the evolution of that innovation, showing how Shakespeare responded to changes in the personnel of his acting fellowship and to competing drama, such as that produced for the children's companies after 1599. Covering over two decades of theatrical history, van Es explores the playwright's career through four distinct phases, ending on the conditions that shaped Shakespeare's late style. Paradoxically, Shakespeare emerges as a playwright unique 'in company'—special, in part, because of the unparalleled working conditions that he enjoyed.

Shot/Countershot, a book by Lucy Fischer. Get Shot/Countershot Books in several format like PDF, EPUB, Mobi. Download Shot/Countershot books, Do films made by women comprise a "counter-cinema" radically different from the dominant tradition? Feminist film critics contend that women filmmakers do present from a distinctive vision, or "countershot," and Lucy Fischer argues persuasively for this view. In rich detail this book relates the idea of a counter-cinema to theories of intertextuality and locates it in the broad context of recent feminist film, literary, and art criticism. Fischer also employs an original critical model of the dialogue between women's cinema and film tradition in the very organization of the book. Each chapter discusses a theme or genre (such as the musical, the "double," the myth of womanhood, and the figure of the actress), counterposing two or more works--from the feminist and from the dominant cinema. What emerges is a fascinating picture of a women's film tradition that not only addresses but reworks and remakes the mainstream cinema. Fischer successfully combines two main strains of feminist criticism: the deconstructive critique of the dominant culture from a feminist standpoint and the study of a feminist counterculture. Examining films from Persona and The Lady from Shanghai to Girlfriends and Sisters, or the Balance of Happiness, the book offers fresh interpretations of individual works and can, incidentally, serve as an introduction to the field of feminist film criticism. Get A G Stromberg — First Class Scientist, Second Class Citizen Books in several format like PDF, EPUB, Mobi. Download A G Stromberg — First Class Scientist, Second Class Citizen books, Armin G Stromberg was arguably one of the founding fathers of the technique of stripping voltammetry frequently used in chemical analysis, yet he is virtually unheard of in Western scientific circles. He was a brilliant scientist, but due to his German ancestry he was interred in one of the NKVD GULAG camps at the outbreak of the Second World War. This semi-biographical history presents the complete set of 74 surviving letters written by Stromberg to his wife during this period. The letters provide both historians and the interested public with a rare and unique glimpse into the everyday living conditions of inmates in one of the GULAG labour camps. The book also traces Stromberg's life following his release. More importantly, it relates how he founded the thriving Tomsk school to the wider historical context of electroanalysis in the USSR, drawing conclusions about the rate of scientific development as compared to the West and showing how ‘wet analysis’ remained of vital importance to industry long after equivalent measurements were made elsewhere. Readers will also appreciate how Stromberg's invaluable contributions in the Tomsk School of Electroanalysis laid the foundations for the extensive metallurgical extraction and nuclear industries that dominated the entire Siberian region for many years. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the life and times of an important, yet often overlooked scientist of the Second World War. It can be read by anybody interested in getting a picture of USSR science, and the hard struggle of its people to reach world significance. It does not need special background knowledge in science, and it will be valuable for historians as well as for the science community.” Journal of Solid State Electrochemistry

Attached, a book by Amir Levine,Rachel Heller. Get Attached Books in several format like PDF, EPUB, Mobi. Download Attached books, “Over a decade after its publication, one book on dating has people firmly in its grip.” —The New York Times We already rely on science to tell us what to eat, when to exercise, and how long to sleep. Why not use science to help us improve our relationships? In this revolutionary book, psychiatrist and neuroscientist Dr. Amir Levine and Rachel Heller scientifically explain why why some people seem to navigate relationships effortlessly, while others struggle. Discover how an understanding of adult attachment—the most advanced relationship science in existence today—can help us find and sustain love. Pioneered by psychologist John Bowlby in the 1950s, the field of attachment posits that each of us behaves in relationships in one of three distinct ways: • Anxious people are often preoccupied with their relationships and tend to worry about their partner's ability to love them back • Avoidant people equate intimacy with a loss of independence and constantly try to minimize closeness. • Secure people feel comfortable with intimacy and are usually warm and loving. Attached guides readers in determining what attachment style they and their mate (or potential mate) follow, offering a road map for building stronger, more fulfilling connections with the people they love.

The Inheritance tells of the greed of those who hold economic power, and reminds us that silence and inaction amount to complicity. Kumari, a book by William Buchan. Get Kumari Books in several format like PDF, EPUB, Mobi. Download Kumari books, This first novel attempts the portrait of a "lone hand"--A young man of strongly individual charachter who affects deeply al with whom he has to deal. Armin Wensley is that rarest of all beings, a fully realised person, and this is the story of the two great loves of his life - the first for dark-browed Laura Greenwood, worked out among the sophisticated, urban gaieties of Calcutta; the second for the shy sixteen-year-old Indian girl Kumari, which reaches a climax of intense beauty, pity and terror in a remote hill station in Assam. Kumari tells the reader as much about India and the long course of British rule there as a hundred official publications; and the author's sympathy with that strange, desperate land is matched by the infinite delicacy with which he handles the affairs of the human heart.

Paul Rand, a book by Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo,Paul Rand. Get Paul Rand Books in several format like PDF, EPUB, Mobi. Download Paul Rand books, Paul Rand: Modernist Design illuminates Rand's role as a major figure at the epicenter of twentieth-century art and design. This book is a compendium of essays, tributes, interviews, dialogues, photographic reproductions, contextual timeline, extensive bibliography, and impressions of Rand's impact on modern communication practice and theory. We know Paul Rand through the advertising, editorial, publishing, institutional, identity, corporate, and intellectual legacy he left behind. For him, modernism was a way of life and a belief form, not a style. Like the European proponents, he understood the tenets of modernism as those which could be employed to better human experience in the modern world. He gave life to his art, definition to graphic design, and a reputation to a discipline in need of the evocation of enduring quality. Rand's contemporaries, students, and friends knew a man of even more extraordinarily cultivated and diverse talents and interests. He was an early voice in proposing the essence of modernist theories in visual communication. Rand was both ruthlessly pragmatic and a visionary. Paul Rand: Modernist Design adds to the growing literature on Paul Rand, helping to place him in the proper context within a century of innovative art, design, architecture, science, and technology.
